Stair treads and stair systems

In home gardens as well as in parks and public spaces, it is always necessary to elegantly intercept different heights. In open terrain, this is achieved by means of earth modeling, earth retaining walls or (natural stone) walls. However, if the open space or garden is to be made more usable, stair treads or entire stair systems can profitably open up the area.

We have various single steps in our offer, with which you can bridge small height differences. In our SCALA range, however, you will also find complete staircases that are either self-supporting or built into the floor. The treads can be either completely made of metal. However, depending on the model, it is also possible to fill with natural stone or gravel.

You can find all the information for your planning on the following page. You can find more ideas from the EARTH category here.

We offer the following SCALA elements:

  • Single steps
  • Platform stairs kit
  • Complete staircase CALVI
  • Stringer staircase WANGA
  • Cantilever solid staircase CORTE

Everything important at a glance.

Single stage structure

The single steps of Gartenmetall® are available in C-shape, L-shape or I-shape. From it you can easily and inexpensively build stairs. They are set like block steps and fixed either with flat iron anchors or with point foundations. Typical step widths are 98 cm, 120 cm or 148 cm. The standard riser height is 18 cm, and the tread depth is 25 cm. For more information, please refer to our product info.

Platform stairs kit

The installation of stairs can be facilitated and accelerated if prefabricated kits are used. We construct these according to your specifications with corners, curves and prepared screw-on plates. The steps are stably connected with cross braces and are filled with rolled gravel, chippings, etc. during installation and then covered with the pavement. Delivery is made – wherever possible – in one piece or with a few assemblies that are bolted together on site. For more information, please refer to our product info.

Complete pipe staircase CALVI

The complete pipe staircase CALVI allows for a particularly fast assembly, during which almost nothing can go wrong due to the stable construction. The staircase consists of two side stringers, height 300 mm, and welded adjusting steps, standard with 6 or 12 steps. The step covering (on site) is freely selectable: Natural stone slabs and tiles, paving stones, gravel or exposed concrete. When choosing the material, pay attention to slip resistance! You can find more information in our product info

Stringer staircase WANGA as a complete staircase

The stringer staircase WANGA consists of two side stringers made of metal and freely selectable treads. The staircase is delivered pre-assembled in one piece and is very easy to assemble. For example, a grating can be used as a tread material, but also wood or other stable and anti-slip materials. As a standard, we offer the WANGA staircase with a step width of 100 cm or 120 cm and with 6 or 12 steps. For more information, please refer to our product info.

Cantilever solid staircase CORTE

With the cantilever solid staircase you can quickly and elegantly overcome different heights. For this purpose, the staircase is bolted to a stable approach and exit or fixed with point foundations. Depending on the material thickness, up to 6 steps are possible in one piece without support. For longer flights of stairs, intermediate support or support from the terrain is necessary. For slip resistance, all steps are provided with 2-row welded studs. For more information, please refer to our product info.

Cantilever solid staircase CORTE

The so-called step size rule applies to the rise ratio of stair treads. An optimum walking feel is achieved when the following relationship applies between the tread depth “a” of a step and the tread height “s” of a step:

Step size rule
2s + a = approx. 63 cm

Notes for planning

  • Slip resistance requirements apply to outdoor stairs. In Germany, the minimum slip resistance class must be R11 (corresponds to inclination angle 19° to 27°). In the case of metal stair coverings, e.g. the self-supporting solid staircase CORTE, this requirement is achieved by the applied weld studs.
  • Where fall heights exceed 1 m, suitable fall protection such as railings must be installed in accordance with DIN 18065. In addition, the local regulations (in Germany, the respective state building codes (LBO)) must be checked to see whether extended regulations regarding fall protection do not apply.
  • Particularly in the case of cantilever solid staircases, care must be taken to ensure a stable connection at the entry and exit of the staircase. As a simple guideline, depending on the width of the stairs, up to more than 1 kN (approx. 100 kg) of load must be transferred per stair tread at the entrance and exit. In case of doubt, a separate structural analysis is necessary. The installing company is always responsible for the stability and its verification.
